Women's Voices in Song — an exploration, inspired in part by the Women's Song Forum, of different ways women and women-identifying musicians and composers have expressed their voices in song from Hildegard of Bingen writing sacred song for her own voice and the voices of her community of women, to Barbara Strozzi, to singers such as Umm Kulthum and Bi Kidude, Marian Anderson, Lata Mangeshkar, to singer song-writers such as Joni Mitchell, Lila DownsRhiannon Giddens, and  Janelle Monáe, to composer-singers such as Pauline ViardotAbbey Lincoln, Nina Simone, and composers such as Margaret Bonds, Amy Beach, and Libby Larson. (This is not anything like an exhaustive list—there are so many possibilities!) We'll consider songs and voices from a wide variety fo musical traditions.  Students will engage with a variety of materials and practice different modes of communicating about music and there will be opportunities to perform as well.
