Inspired by the very popular Victor Hugo's novel Les Miserables, this course examines 19th-century society and many issues of importance during that period: romantic and familial love, the nature of law and justice, morals and religious faith, as well as the architecture and urban design of Paris. It will also consider some of the adaptations for film, television, and the stage. May be repeated for credit, barring duplication of materials.
