ARTH 695 - Topics in Art History: ROMANTICISM
This course explores the artistic movement known as Romanticism, from its emergence in post-Revolutionary France amid disillusionment with Enlightenment reason and order, through its stylistically diverse development by Francisco de Goya, William Blake, Henry Fuseli, J.M.W. Turner, Caspar David Friedrich, and others. Topics will include these artists’ cultivation of originality and imagination, emphasis on nature’s sublime and unknowable power, exploration of emotional and psychological extremes, and fascination with the exotic. Writing Intensive.
