Fundamentals of Cognitive Science
This course will emphasize interdisciplinary approaches to the study of intelligent systems, both natural and artificial. Cognitive science synthesizes research from cognitive psychology, computer science, neuroscience, linguistics, and philosophy. The first half of the course will focus on the theoretical and historical foundations of cognitive science. Our main question would be: What is the best way to scientifically study the mind? This will require us to delve into relevant discussions in philosophy of mind. Since cognitive science considers the mind as a biological information processing system, we will also discuss the concept of computing, and how it relates to the human brain. In the second half of the semester, we will be focusing on examples of more recent theories and developments in specific subfields of cognitive science and psychology.
