Additional Course Details:

This course provides an opportunity to gain supervised work experience in a health or social service agency in addition to academic study of important skills and issues in the psychotherapy field. The course may be taken for 4-8 credit hours. The classroom component of the course consists of a weekly, three-hour academic seminar. The seminar involves work consistent with a 700 level, writing intensive psychology course including reading scholarship from the clinical psychology field, as well as academic writing assignments, oral presentations, etc. The seminar also emphasizes collegial/peer support, providing a forum for discussing problems and issues related to the internship experience. It is also a place to develop important critical thinking skills about key issues in the psychotherapy field. Prerequisites for the course include: psychology major, suitable internship placement, instructor's permission, and tentative learning agreement. Enrollment is limited to 15 students, with preference given to seniors. Prerequisites: Psyc 402; 502; 561; and 762 as a pre or co-requisite. WI. 4-8 cr.

In order to take PSYC 793, you must obtain an approved placement site.  Students can take PSYC 793 from 4-8 credits depending on the amount of time spent at the internship site.  (4 credits = 8 hours on site plus the 3 hour once a week class and 8 credits = 16 hours on site plus the 3 hours once a week class).  PSYC 762 Counseling is either a co-requisite or a pre-requisite for PSYC 793.

Approved placement lists are available in the PSYC office or on the department’s website: https://cola.unh.edu/psychology/internships.  Find at least 3 placement sites that interest you.  Call at least 3 sites to start.  It could take a bit of time before you hear back.   It would not hurt to do a follow-up call or email.  Once you secure a site, you will need to create a “learning agreement” with your supervisor.  Many of the sites have been taking on PSYC majors and are familiar with this step.  However, on our website, you can access the internship manual and in that, there is an example of a learning agreement.  Once the learning agreement is completed and signed by you and your supervisor, please submit two copies to Robin Scholefield in McConnell 468A.  We will also need a signed consent form and a registration worksheet informing us of what section of PSYC 793 you would like to register for and whether or not you need PSYC 762.  ALL of this paperwork is DUE by 3pm on April 21st to Robin.
NOTE: You cannot take PSYC 793 without finding a placement site and submitting the paperwork.
