Analysis and problem solving in phonology, morphology, and syntax using data from many languages. Emphasis is both practical (learning how to describe grammar and sound system of a language) and theoretical (understanding languages' behavior). Prereq: LING/ENGL 405, or permission. This is a workshop class in which you will learn how to analyze phonological, morphological and syntactic data from many different languages. As we analyze linguistic data, we will keep asking basic theoretical questions about the nature of human language. This course is recommended as preparation for the advanced linguistics courses.
