Cities of Ancient Italy

This course traces the rise of cities on the Italian peninsula with a special focus on their art and architecture. Our task will be to examine the interaction of various cultures such as the Etruscans, Latins, Greeks, Phoenicians, and others as Rome grew into an empire. Starting with the foundation of Rome until its fall in late antiquity we will focus on the development of urban centers such as Pompeii, Herculaneum, Ostia, Paestum, Cerveteri, Ravenna, and many more including Rome itself. Can count as a substitute for ARTH 587, 674, 675, 678-684, or 688 toward other majors and the architectural studies minor. No prerequisites necessary.
