Contemporary Art & Design

This seminar course examines the major debates and practices of contemporary art spanning the time period from the 1960s to the present. Rather than a strictly chronological survey, the course focuses on specific moments, techniques, and theoretical frameworks that inform contemporary practice and criticism. Movements for consideration will include minimalism, performance art, and appropriation art to name a few. The course will end with an examination of emerging art movements of the present, particularly in relation to the impact of globalization on art and the predominance of socially engaged art as a new art practice.
