This course will investigate the changing attitude of the Germans toward nature and sustainability over a broad sweep of history by examining the representation of nature in fictional writing. Can narrative help us understand the notion of a sustainable nature and compel us to act?  The literary texts will be supplemented with readings from the natural sciences and social sciences.
