For Fall 2020 the workshop will be: Imaging Environmentalism
This class will explore the ways that digital photography can be used to better understand and respond to the growing threat of climate change that humans face as we progress into the age of the anthropocene. By leveraging photography’s rich history, social ubiquity, aesthetic characteristics, and perceived ability to convey truth, students will design photographic projects that make sense of the existential threat posed by a shifting climate and environmental destruction. Advanced photographic techniques and equipment will be presented to solve visual problems arising from each student's work. Emphasis is placed on research into content and context of the photographic image, environmental science, and environmental policy through group projects, readings, creative assignments, class discussions, field trips, and critiques.
