The course will introduce students to the practice skills needed to effectively address the challenges of integrated primary care services for persons with health, mental health, and substance use problems. Students will be introduced to the language and culture of primary care and will develop a working knowledge of a wide variety of chronic health conditions. Students will examine the benefits of interprofessional practice and current best practices for effective interventions. Building on the student’s foundational knowledge of general practice skills (engagement, screening, comprehensive assessment, treatment planning, documentation, and evaluation) this course will emphasize practice skills and implementation of approaches designed to enhance effective communication, consumer engagement, motivation, and empowerment with clients and as a member of a collaborative health care team. Using case vignettes, students will gain experience and skills necessary to be effective in primary care behavioral health roles.
