TOPIC for HIST 498 sec 01 - HISTORY OF ANIMALS
Do animals have histories? Despite a few rare exceptions of trained pigs, dogs, monkeys, and elephants, animals have left us no written sources to study. Nevertheless, the relationships between humans and other species of animals have changed dramatically over time. Humans have shaped animal lives to serve many purposes; at the same time, animals have served as agents of change in human history. Drawing on recent scholarship in environmental history, economic history, social history, military history, and cultural history, this course will focus on the history of animals as pests, pets, producers, and products. We will study the economic relationships between humans and animals from the ancient past to the present day. Course meets History major requirement for Group I.
