A PORTRAIT OF THREE CITIES: ANCIENT POMPEII, HERCULANEUM AND OSTIA

This course examines the appearance and character of ancient Roman cities with a specific focus on the towns of
Pompeii and Herculaneum as they were frozen by the eruption of Vesuvius in 79 CE as well as Ostia, which functioned
as the port of Rome. We will explore the art and architecture produced by Roman society and recover some of its
meaning using traditional methods and new approaches in art historical and archaeological inquiry.
