Special Topics Course Title:  Putting Media Research into Practice. What are the differences between journalism and academic research? How can I differentiate between opinion and fact? What makes a good research question? What are the ethical challenges of doing research on people?     
This course provides students with an introduction to research in media studies. In this course, students will learn to identify, locate, and critically analyze academic research. They will consider what makes a “good” research question and explore various methods for answering those questions. The course will focus on qualitative methods used in media studies research including content analysis, textual analysis and semiotics, participant observation and ethnography, interviewing and focus groups, and digital methods. Working in groups and individually, students will design their own research projects based on their personal interests. As they design their studies, they will consider the practical and ethical challenges involved in conducting primary research. At the end of the course, students will have the skills to design and execute primary research in media studies.
