Additional Course Details:

This course has three main goals. The first is to engage you in the joy of reading major literary genres: fiction, poetry, and drama; in addition, this particular section includes a close examination of graphic narrative (a long-form comics). The second goal includes understanding the conventions that writers use to create their work, analyzing those who adhere to those conventions and those who deviate from them. Third, you will practice essay writing using key terms in literary studies. Together, we will create a community of educated readers who will understand the connections among literature, history, culture, and politics, and acquire fundamental skills for life-long learning and literary enjoyment.

English 419 is the required gateway course for all majors in the English department.  A grade of C or better is required for credit towards the  major.

It also fulfills the following Discovery Program attributes: Writing Intensive Course, Inquiry Course.
