Additional Course Details:
There are over 500 Native nations recognized by the United States federal government. This course introduces students to these nations' diverse histories and their interactions with European, and then American, states. We begin in the 1600s by retelling Pocahontas's story and will end in 2016 with the Dakota Access Pipeline protests. Along the way, we focus on Native activists who challenged the encroachment of the United States on tribal sovereignty as well as those who sought integration into the American body politic. Case studies will encourage students to think about definitions of race, citizenship, and nationhood.
